February 2010 ArchiveFebruary 20, 2010
There are a bunch of events in the Winter Games that put me into
straight into an Olympicoma if I have to watch them for more than 5
minutes (read: any type of skiing/skating that takes longer than a few
minutes per run to complete and/or any type of luge/bobsled event) but
this year I've discovered, strangely enough, that I FREAKING LOVE CURLING. ADORE IT. TOTALLY HOOKED. LOVES ME SOME CURLING.
Who knew, eh? It's the kind of love that sneaks up on you. I've been
watching it every night around supper time and I've got the lingo down
now. I'm all HAMMER! BUTTON! T-LINE!, etc. It's a one way ticket to
the unhippest Crazy Town you've ever seen but I'm enjoying the train
ride. :)

Not buying yarn is pretty easy when you're talking about $20-$25
skeins. It's pretty but at that price point, for me anyway, it's not
all THAT hard to resist. But $3 skeins of yarn?
STRIPING yarn no less? Ugh. My will is no match for that. :( I had
gobbled up 4 skeins before I even knew what my fingers were doing, tap
tap tapping away on the keyboard. I was like HEY, WHATCHA DOING DOWN
THERE WITHOUT ME , FINGERS? Ohhhhhhh, buying yarn! I see. *snort*
I am a weak, weak ass, weak tea person. Heard it here first. lol
Anyhoo. This swirl scarf is sucking the knitting mojo out of me a bit. I mean, look at this thing:

It looks like a wadded up used tissue.
Prettily colored, yes. But used and wadded up nonetheless. It's not
very fun to knit and I'm doing my best to stay away from doing the The
Math in my head of how many more swirls I have left before I am done.
(Note: I don't really need to do The Math to know it won't be any less
than 50 more to go as this sucker has three rows and I'm not even done
with ONE yet...........which is a little depressing, I have to say.)
I'm going to solider on until I have one row complete, wash and block
the ever loving holy hell out it (aka pin it flat to within an inch of
it's life so it dries pretty) and see if that helps with the mojo to go
onward. If it doesn't then I think I'm going to put it on the back
burner where I just knit one swirl here and one swirl there when I'm in
the mood. I'd have it done by NEXT winter that way at any rate, right?
Officially Put On Notice: Sirius Radio. I just figured out today that
those toads won't let you listen online for 'free' anymore as part of
your (very much paid for) subscription, that it's now $3 extra a month?
PFFfffffffttttt, I say! I've already been paying for TWO SUBSCRIPTIONS
for almost five years and you can't throw in a little online usage with
that? I don't listen online very often but it was handy here and
there. I'm certainly not dishing out ANOTHER $36 on top of the $175 I
pay them already for it. NO, no, and what's that word I'm looking for?
Oh right - NO! *grumble*

Hope everyone had a nice Valentine's day. :) Personally, I'm not a big fan of the day but I'm also not a big
fan of being all grouchy-Grinchy so I sucked it up and made some 'love'
cupcakes for the day. I don't have the patience (or equipment) for
fancy decorations on baked goods but this..........ahhhhh, this I can do.
I mean.............how freaking PRETTY is that??? A RAINBOW INSIDE OF EVERY CUPCAKE. *squeeeeeee*
I used just a normal white cake and standard buttercream (1 part
butter/3 parts powdered sugar/dash of liquid). Nothing fancy here
except the colors. :)
(Ain't gonna lie though - it's a bit a tedious to do. Lots of mixing of
colors and dabbing and you end up with 234234123432 more dishes than if
you had just left them white. BUT OMG AREN'T THEY PRETTY?????????? I
had hoped to get some purple in there too to go along with the
red/orange/yellow/green/blue but 5 colors turned out to be exactly what
I could handle. lol)

Arrrrrggggggggggh.
I was doing *so* well with the regular blog entries there and
then...........I fell off the wagon and now it's been over a week, A
WEEK!!!!, since I've been around. For shame. It's mostly not even my
fault. We've just hit the part of winter where I seem to slip into a
coma. It's hard to write blog entries when you're in a coma, y'all.
Just saying!!! So tired of snow, and cold, and dryness, and darkness,
and dry skin, and snow, and this house, and........zzzzzzz. <--See? COMA. There
is big ball of fiery brightness out in the sky today that's, like,
SHINING ON ME and in MY EYES and stuff, and it burns and makes me want
to sleep even more. lolol And I'm tired of people saying spring is
around the corner because around here? Not so much. The trees don't
even fill in completely until the END OF MAY. Where's my 911 waaaaaaaaaambulance to cure me of my pathological state of whinehood? Oh here he is:

Hmph.
Anyhoo. I *will* be working on new beads this weekend, the work, it
goes so slowly at the moment. *yawn* But I do need to buckle down, eh?
I've been much more productive at night on non-bead stuff while
watching tv. I finally finally finally finally finally finished up the
'finishing' on the batch of the Blackbird stockings I stitched up
during November/December. (With the exception of the umbrella one -
that one I stitched up last week.)

I'm
determined to finish every last one of these up, all 36 of them, OH YES
I WILL. With this latest batch done, I'm now up to................May.
Ugh. So so so many months left to go. lol I need to take a short
break from it though for the moment because I signed up for a pin
pillow exchange on Becky Bee's blog and I need to get that ready and
mailed before the end of next month. (Not that it will take me that
long to finish but I want to do it early enough to cover any 'issues'
that may come up with mailing because that would be my luck and I
don't want to end up on the Blog of Shame for not completing it on
time. Nooooooo, no no! Will not do. :))

And I started up my swirl scarf last night (for which I bought all the stuff for last October)
but it's crap and I have to start over. BUT THAT'S OKAY. No, really.
For one thing, the yarn is not changing colors as fast as I thought it
would so I'm going to have alternate the colors manually for each swirl
that I start vs. letting the yarn do it naturally. (Not at all
difficult to change because each swirl is knit separate and then the
yarn is cut to start another one. So instead of using the same skein,
like I started doing, I'll rotate between the five skeins that I have
to get a different coloration going for each swirl.) Also, I wasn't
happy with the cast-on because I wasn't exactly sure how to do it and FAR BE FOR ME TO GET OFF MY LAZY ASS TO GOOGLE THAT SHIT BEFORE STARTING FOR REAL,
so I winged it and it's, uhh, not so good. Too fiddly and too floppy
and more than a little sloppy. But I know how to do it the right way
NOW and, even better, since I purchased the yarn for this the Yarn
Harlot knit/blogged about this same project last month or so which
means 123412341234123 people were drawn to it because of her and I now
have a gazillion brains to pick on Ravelry vs. the 10 or so brave souls
who had finished it back in October. Basically, I can gather up all their tips
that they learned from their mistakes and HOPEFULLY not make so many of
my own. It's not as bad as all that though, so far. The swirls
themselves, once you get past the hinky cast on, are ridiculously easy
and quick to knit up. ONWARD I SAY! February 3, 2010
Look at this craziness:
Cute mittens, right? Now look closer:

It's cupcakes. CUPCAKES. The thought of knitting them scares the shit
out of me because OMG ALL THAT COLORWORK but how flipping cute is that?
Link to the pattern is here. Photos from the WEBS store blog here.

Who's feeling LUCKY??
Today is the first of the month, which means it was time to pick a winner for the sheepy ballerina set!
All
the eligible names were put into the Giant Satin Sack of HAPPINESS

person was..............
Woooo! Happing beading with your new beads, Stacey!!
I should have a new giveaway up in a day or so. I'm still into it and people love getting free stuff so why not, right?
